His humble, humorous, thought-provoking account gives readers an intimate glimpse into American newspapering and, at the same time, into his own soul. He also confronted his problem with alcoholism. From the heyday of Harry Guggenheim and Alicia Patterson s groundbreaking Newsday to Boston and Washington insider politics, from the world-changing events of the 1960s and '70s to the Sun Belt suburbs of the 1980s and '90s, Bill McIlwain's tales entertain and inspire.. In Dancing Naked with the Rolling Stones, McIlwain tells both sides of the story and how he learned to cope, finding peace and happiness in radical ways. Over the fast-paced and fascinating years that Bill McIlwain spent as editor of some of North America's most prestigious newspapers, he met and worked with the great, the petty, the famous, the eccentric--Tony Insolia . --Bill MoyersWhen you read this book, you'll understand why Bill McIlwain has such an enthusiastic fan club. --Diane McFarlin, publisher, Sarasota Herald-TimesBill Mcilwain looks back on a troubled life with total candor and honesty and succeeds wonderfully in offering readers an inspirational story of his ultimate success in overcoming the internal demons that made him a prisoner of alcohol. Hard-working and hard-drinking, he fought heroically to save himself from Demon Rum and one newspaper after another from extinction. The most compelling theme, though, is his struggle with alcoholism and how he ultimately prevailed. His reminiscences are both entertaining and instructive. His tenacious courage won out and this graceful memoir will make you sit up and salute a noble soul evMcIlwain held high-level editorial positions at the Toronto Star, the Record in Bergen County, N.J., the Boston Herald-American, the Washington Star and the Arkansas Gazette. He retired as senior editor of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group in 1992 and launched a consulting business, working as a writing coach with reporters and editors. From sports writer and general-assignment reporter in North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia, McIlwain rose through the ranks at New York's renowned Newsday from chief copy editor to managing editor and then editor. He also helped found and was editor of New York Newsday and later edited the Sarasota Herald Tribune. His experience in alcoholism rehabilitation in the 1970s led him to write A Farewell to Alcohol, a well-regarded memoir. Bill McIlwain's newspaper career has spanned more thanOverall, it's really not a bad story and it has a lot of very nice, not sex scenes. The emotional conflict is the main continuing storyline and can feel repetitive since the two men never really resolve their issues. The concepts behind solution focused brief therapy are outlined clearly, the writing is direct and personable. 12-volt, etc.. The anger and reconciliation is -way- too hurried, and lacks a great deal of detail. It turns out that the "something" is Jake. All good, fast shipping, exactly as described , thanks!. Molestation is a hard topic for many people to read about, but I applaud this author. This book is great!! It is full of information about the book of Revelation in the Bible. Was he oblivious to this phenomenon? The same criticism applies to the other major subject of this book--his "good-bye to booze." McIlwain has little insight into what made him an alcoholic, nor what has kept him sober. In fact, given his daily marijuana habit, he has simply substituted grass for alcohol. Inst
